TMS therapy is one of the newest methods of therapy that can offer significant relief for symptoms of mental health issues such as anxiety & depression without medication. While the need for medication can be a barrier for some due to side effects or lack of effectiveness, TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) provides an alternative, non-invasive option. But one of the most common questions people have before starting treatment is: how much does TMS therapy cost?
What is TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is a safe and non-pharmacological approach to treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions by using electromagnetic pulses directed at brain regions that impact mood, anxiety, OCD, etc.
Who Can Provide/Offer TMS Therapy?
TMS is most often provided by a psychiatrist who has an MD or DO. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) may also provide TMS, but it depends on the insurance if it will be covered for a PMHNP. At A Better Day Psychiatry, our psychiatrist as well as PMHNP’s are certified in TMS and able to provide treatment. Our providers stay up to date on the latest protocols and indications for TMS to deliver a tailored, effective, and safe approach. We use the Magstim Horizon 3.0 device which provides guided and extremely accurate treatments while being very well tolerated.
When is TMS Therapy Covered By Insurance?
TMS is typically covered by insurance when an individual has a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (moderate or higher severity) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and have tried and failed two medications for that condition (in some cases only one medication needs to have been tried). The individual also cannot have a history of seizures, which would be contraindicated for TMS. Our billers at ABD can check your insurance coverage to determine if TMS is covered and what next steps may be needed. In most cases, a prior authorization or pre-certification is necessary before beginning TMS. Our biller would then be able to seek authorization then explain how your benefits work with TMS. We are in-network for Cigna, Carelon, United, and Anthem/Blue Cross plans and are able to seek single case agreements for TMS for any other plans that we are not in-network with.
Costs and Options for TMS therapy Without Insurance
If you do not want to go through insurance, do not meet criteria to be covered through insurance (as described above), or are seeking a treatment protocol that is not covered by insurance such as an accelerated TMS protocol then self pay may be the best option. TMS therapy may range from 250-500/session and a course of 20-30 sessions may range from 6000-15000. Our rates at ABD are found on our TMS Page. We also offer payment plans as well as financing options. Book a consultation today if you would like to learn more.
